(Sacramento) – With relatives of gun violence victims looking on, Assemblymember Marc Levine (D-Marin County), Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and several other Assembly Democratic lawmakers gathered for a news conference in the State Capitol to discuss the upcoming National Gun Violence Awareness Day (June 2nd) and pending gun related legislation. Assemblymember Levine authored Assembly Bill 1664 to remove the “bullet button” loophole in California’s assault weapons ban. “We raise our children in communities, not war zones,” said Assemblymember Levine. “Military assault weapons have no place on our streets and gun violence must not be tolerated. AB 1664 closes a loophole that allows military-style assault rifles to be sold legally in California.” Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
Let's break down the scope of the problem. Over the course of the last day in the United States, roughly:
And that's just today.
And yet, time and again, we are told there isn't much anyone can do to prevent this from happening.
So here's another number: 0. NO MORE VICTIMS.
Let's work together to reach that goal. My colleagues and I are working on a package of bills that has the potential to get us closer. But we need your support.

AB 1135 (Levine & Ting) Closes the Bullet Button Loophole in California’s Assault Weapon Ban
The California State Senate today approved AB 1135 by Assemblymembers Marc Levine (D-Marin County) and Phil Ting (D-San Francisco) to close a loophole in law that allows gun manufacturers to use “bullet buttons” to evade the assault weapons ban in California. Senator Steve Glazer (D-Orinda) presented the bill during the Senate floor session this morning.
“Military assault weapons have no place on our streets and gun violence must not be tolerated. We raise our children in communities, not war zones,” said Assemblymember Levine. “This legislation closes a loophole in law that allows military-style assault rifles to be sold legally in California. The gun manufacturers’ development of the bullet button clearly exploits California law and allows dangerous weapons on our streets.”
