Assemblymember Nguyen Secured and Presented $500,000 in State Funding to Help Launch Meadowview Farmers’ Market

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA – On Sunday, June 9, 2024, Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen (D-Elk Grove) presented the City of Sacramento and the Meadowview Community Farmers’ Market with a $500,000 check. This crucial funding will launch the Meadowview Community Farmers’ Market to provide affordable and locally sourced fresh produce to improve the health and well-being of those residing in South Sacramento and the surrounding area.

“For many families, just making sure you can put food on the table is a lot to worry about. Eating healthy is the last thing on your mind when you are struggling to make ends meet,” said Assemblymember Nguyen. “I am proud to secure seed money that will provide access to fresh produce grown nearby and help families to live healthier lifestyles.”

In partnership with community organizations, the City of Sacramento will establish the Meadowview Community Farmers’ Market. The median household income for the Meadowview neighborhood in South Sacramento is $46,190 compared to $59.456 citywide. This one-time investment will increase access points to fresh and healthy foods for underserved communities and improve the local food economy.

“I’m excited for the launch of the Meadowview Farmers’ Market. South Sacramento residents deserve equitable access to fresh and nutritious foods and we are so proud to now make this possible. Sacramento may be America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital but for many in South Sacramento, fast food and unhealthy options have been the norm,” said Councilmember Mai Vang. “Thank you to Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen for securing this very much-needed investment for Meadowview. The establishment of this community farmers’ market is our commitment to ensuring healthy access for present and future generations to come.”
