(SAN RAFAEL, CA) – Assemblymember Marc Levine (D-Marin County) has honored ExtraFood as the North Bay’s 2022 Nonprofit of the Year. ExtraFood rescues excess food from local businesses and partners with fellow nonprofits that serve Marin’s most vulnerable children, families and seniors.
“All of us at ExtraFood - our staff, volunteers, and community - are grateful to Assemblymember Levine for recognizing us as a non-profit leader in the North Bay as we work to combat hunger, food waste, and climate change,” said Will Dittmar, Executive Director of ExtraFood.
In the U.S., one in five people don’t know where their next meal will come from. Additionally, 35% of food goes to waste. ExtraFood has been working since 2013 to address these problems. ExtraFood has partnered with over 300 food donors and 146 nonprofit organizations in Marin County to rescue food and serve the hungry. Their volunteers deliver food to over 8,000 people every week, and have rescued over 5 million pounds of food in the last decade. Levine currently serves as Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Food Systems whose work explores the nexus between California’s bountiful agricultural industry and the growing need of communities throughout California to increase access to healthy and affordable food.
“I am proud to recognize and celebrate the important work of ExtraFood,” said Assemblymember Levine. “They are an exceptional model for how to address hunger, reduce food waste, and fight climate change all at the same time. They are providing fresh, healthy foods to many who would not otherwise have access to it. And they have become a critical part of Marin County’s emergency response, providing over 90,000 freshly-made meals during the COVID-19 pandemic alone. I am grateful for their work and service to the community.”
