(SACRAMENTO, CA) – With millions of Californians facing food insecurity due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Assemblymember Marc Levine (D – Marin County) today led a bipartisan effort requesting Governor Gavin Newsom to extend National Guard support for food banks through 2021.
In March of this year, Governor Newsom activated a short-term deployment of National Guard troops to support food distribution at food banks across the state. This temporary deployment has become an ongoing lifeline for millions of residents who rely on food donations to meet their basic needs. According to the California Association of Food Banks, nearly 1 in 4 Californians face food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Responding to this longer term need and the science driven data that the COVID-19 pandemic will continue at least through next year, Levine, joined by Senators Melissa Hurtado, John Laird and Monique Limon and Assemblymembers, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Steve Bennett, Marc Berman, Lisa Calderon, Jordan Cunningham, Cristina Garcia, Lorena Gonzalez, Ash Kalra, Brian Maienschein, Sharon Quirk-Silva, Kelly Seyarto, Carlos Villapudua, Christopher M. Ward and Buffy Wicks in calling for National Guard deployment at food banks through 2021. The National Guard is uniquely qualified to support food banks due to their training in logistics and their strategic placement across the state.
“Families across California are facing food insecurity at an alarming rate never seen in our lifetimes,” said Assemblymember Marc Levine. “The holiday season highlights the critical work of the National Guard at food banks, but the need for this work will not end when holiday lights come down. With millions of Californians relying on food banks for the most essential of needs and COVID-19 infections continuing at an unrestrained rate, we desperately need to continue National Guard troop support at food banks at least through next year. I know Governor Newsom has seen the value of National Guard support at food banks and am hopeful that he will continue their deployment to ensure that all Californians struggling with food insecurity have access to healthy food.”
