(Sacramento, CA) – Assemblymember Marc Levine (D- Marin County) released the following statement in response to Pacific Gas & Electric’s (PG&E) recent “Public Safety Power Shutoff” events across California.
“As one of only two Democrats to vote against both of the Legislature’s recent bailouts of PG&E, I am sadly not surprised by PG&E’s recent irresponsible and incompetent power shut down. For decades, PG&E has lined the pockets of their investors with billions while abandoning their legal obligation to deliver energy safely to homes and businesses throughout the state.
PG&E’s latest stunt by cutting power to over 2 million Californians put vulnerable populations at risk, kept over 130,000 students from attending school and failed to address PG&E’s continued neglect of their electrical infrastructure.
PG&E’s continued recklessness tells me that something more sinister is on their agenda. For years PG&E has unsuccessfully sought legislation to eliminate “inverse condemnation”, or in common terms, the requirement that PG&E be financially liable for wildfire damage caused by their equipment.
We cannot allow PG&E’s greed and neglect to be rewarded by shifting financial responsibility away from shareholders and on the backs of Californians.
California families have had enough of PG&E’s lies and excuses. No more bailouts.”
