Bringing Accountability into Election Spending

(San Francisco) – Assemblymember Marc Levine (D-San Rafael) wants the people who spend “dark money” on elections to be held accountable so he’s introduced Assembly Bill 1494. AB 1494 would impose a tax on independent expenditures, which is campaign spending done by outside groups, instead of by candidates or party committees. The measure has drawn statewide attention for its reform-minded attempt to stanch the flow of so-called dark money in politics. KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern spoke with Assemblymember Levine about his legislation and filed this report.
