Mid-Autumn Festival: A Celebration of Reunion and Tradition
The Mid-Autumn Festival, known as Zhongqiu Jie (中秋节) in Chinese and often referred to as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is one of China's most cherished holidays. Second only to the significance of the Chinese New Year, this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm nationwide.
In 2024, the Mid-Autumn Festival will be observed on September 17th, offering a memorable 1-day public holiday for those in Mainland China. This festival is a time for families to come together, reminiscent of Thanksgiving in many ways. Traditional celebrations include family dinners, moon worship, paper lantern lighting, and, of course, the sharing of mooncakes.
The festival’s influence extends beyond China’s borders, with celebrations held in countries like the United States (particularly within the Asian American community), Singapore, and Malaysia. While these countries mark the occasion on the same date, it is not recognized as a public holiday.
