Covered California

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. The law puts in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that will roll out over the next few years. The Affordable Care Act will protect consumers, make coverage more affordable, and expand health care access. Starting January 2014, most Americans will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

California was the first state in the nation to enact legislation to start implementing the Affordable Care Act. It created Covered California, a marketplace where Californians can buy health coverage that cannot be denied or canceled if they are sick or have pre-existing health conditions. Starting January 2014, Californians will have access to quality health coverage through Covered California, with pre-enrollment commencing in October 2013.

California Marches Forward to Making Health Insurance Affordable for Everyone

The Golden State's version of the federal Affordable Care Act has hit the ground running. Covered California has officially started open enrollment to provide affordable, high quality health care coverage to its citizens in an open marketplace. Californians who sign up in 2013 will start their health care coverage on January 1, 2014, although residents can sign up through March 31, 2014. Covered California is aimed at uninsured Californians, but anyone who is eligible can sign up and no one can be denied or penalized for a pre-existing condition. In addition, you could be eligible for federal subsidies to help pay premiums if your family qualifies for financial assistance. Those who are happy with their current health insurance can keep the coverage they already have. Watch this Assembly Access video for more details. To enroll, visit or call (800) 300-1506.
